Black Operators in Tech: Thriving in High-Growth Companies

This month, Black Venture Network, in collaboration with Wise and Monzo Bank, hosted an intimate and deeply impactful conversation on the realities of being a Black operator in high-growth companies. The event brought together senior operators across the ecosystem to discuss career pathways, workplace wellbeing, and the role of community in supporting long-term success.

The fireside chat featured Perpetua Gitungo (Compliance Director, Wise) and Heldiney Pereira (Senior Lead Designer, Monzo Bank), moderated by Selina Wilson (Global Director of DE&I, Wise). Together, they explored the invisible barriers Black professionals often face, including the “glass cliff”,  the heightened pressure many minoritised operators feel to consistently overperform, and the toll this takes on wellbeing and longevity in the workplace.

A key theme was the importance of aligning work with personal purpose. Heldiney shared how he intentionally pursues roles and projects that allow him to create impact in the areas that matter most to him, reinforcing that sustainable careers are built where values and work intersect.

The speakers also highlighted the significance of internal communities such as Black Monzo and Black Wisers, which provide representation, belonging, and support within large organisations. These groups were cited as influential factors in their decision to join and remain in their respective companies.

The evening sparked honest reflection, practical insight, and a renewed commitment to building environments where Black operators can thrive without compromising their well-being. This discussion reflects BVN’s ongoing mission: to create spaces where knowledge, connection, and opportunity propel Black talent forward across the tech ecosystem.
